How to clean and preserve your wedding dresses and veils

Your wedding dress and veil are one of the most precious keepsakes from your big day, carrying irreplaceable romantic memories. Proper cleaning and long-term preservation can keep their delicate fabrics, exquisite lace, beading and sequins in pristine condition, preserving this beautiful memory for decades. Below is our professional bilingual guide to help you care for your bridal attire correctly.

Key Principles

Do not delay cleaning! Most invisible stains (sweat, perfume, red wine, grass, foundation, oil) will oxidize over time, turning yellow or brown and causing permanent damage to delicate fabrics like satin, tulle and lace. Immediate stain removal and cleaning are the top priority.

Wedding Dress Cleaning

1. Local Stain First Aid

Gently blot fresh stains with a clean white lint-free cloth and cold water (never rub or scrub vigorously, to avoid fabric pilling or beading falling off). For oily stains, sprinkle a small amount of talcum powder on the area, let it sit for 2-3 hours to absorb oil, then brush off lightly.

 2. Professional Dry Cleaning (Strongly Recommended)

For most wedding dresses with beading, lace, embroidery or delicate fabrics, must go to a professional bridal dry cleaning store. Tell the cleaner to use mild, non-bleach dry cleaning solution, and avoid machine washing, hand soaking or bleaching at home, which will deform or damage the dress.

3. Hand Washing for Simple Fabrics

For simple tulle or satin wedding dresses without decorative accessories, wash with cold water (below 30℃) and neutral mild detergent (baby shampoo/bridal special detergent). Gently press to clean, do not twist or wring, rinse repeatedly with cold water until no foam remains.

Veil Cleaning

Veils are made of ultra-delicate tulle and lace, so extra care is needed: • Hand wash only with cold water and a tiny amount of neutral detergent, gently press to clean, never rub or machine wash. • Rinse thoroughly, avoid residual detergent causing yellowing. • For veils with pearls, crystals or embroidery, focus on cleaning the fabric part and avoid scrubbing the decorative parts.

2. Drying Method

• No direct sunlight: Avoid sun exposure, which will fade fabrics and make fibers brittle. Dry in a cool, well-ventilated, dark place.

• No hanging drying for wedding dress: Hanging wet wedding dress will stretch the shoulder, waist and skirt, causing irreversible deformation. Lay it flat on a clean, dry white cotton cloth to dry.

• Veil drying: Lay the veil flat gently, smooth out wrinkles, and dry in a ventilated place to avoid hanging and stretching the lace.

3. Long-Term Preservation & Storage

Preparation Before Storage

Ensure the dress and veil are completely dry (100% dry) to prevent mold, mildew or odor during storage.

Prepare acid-free tissue paper, acid-free storage box, and breathable cotton dust cover (never use plastic bags, which will trap moisture and damage fabrics).

Wash and dry your hands thoroughly, or wear clean cotton gloves to avoid leaving sweat or stains on the fabric.

Storage Steps

Line the acid-free storage box with multiple layers of acid-free tissue paper to isolate the dress from the box and prevent fabric discoloration.

Fold the wedding dress gently along the natural seams, pad each fold with acid-free tissue paper to avoid deep creases and fabric wear.

Place the dress flat in the storage box, cover with a layer of acid-free tissue paper, then put the neatly folded veil on top (do not press heavily).

Close the storage box, put it in a cool, dry, dark closet, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, damp areas (bathroom, basement).

Do not hang the wedding dress for a long time, as long-term gravity will stretch the fabric and deform the dress shape.

Regular Inspection

Every 3-6 months, open the storage box in a dry and clean environment to check for moisture, mold or discoloration. Adjust the folding position slightly to avoid permanent creases from long-term pressing.

4. Warm Tips

• Never iron the wedding dress and veil at high temperature, if there are wrinkles, use low-temperature steam iron (keep a distance, do not press directly on beading and lace).

• Avoid contact with cosmetics, perfume, hairspray when wearing, to reduce stain contamination.

• If stored at home, do not place heavy objects on the storage box to avoid crushing the dress's three-dimensional structure and decorative details.

With proper care, your wedding dress and veil will remain as beautiful as the day you said "I do", keeping your sweet wedding memories alive forever.
